Local fishing experience

Out into the Indian Ocean with the Saadani fishermen, in their own boat and on their own terms.

Not a charter. You go out with fishermen from the village in their own boat, the way they go out every day, and you fish the way they fish.

The villages along this coast — Saadani, Mkwaja, Buyuni — have lived off this water for generations; Saadani itself is a Swahili fishing village of around eight hundred people whose livelihood is still mostly fishing.

How the morning goes

• You leave from the beach in a local boat, with the crew who own it.
• Handlines and local technique, not sport-fishing tackle.
• What you catch can be cooked for you back at camp.
• The money goes to the boat’s crew, which is the point of doing it this way.

Worth knowing before you book

• The price is per boat.
• Sea state decides whether it happens; the crew makes that call, not us.
• It takes place outside the park, so no park entry fee applies.
