A boat on the Wami River

Matukio

Wami River boat safari

The Wami River runs into the Indian Ocean at the southern edge of the park. Going up it by boat is the closest thing Saadani has to a signature experience.

Hippo pods, crocodiles on the banks, and an unreasonable amount of birdlife — kingfishers, fish eagles, herons. Mangroves give way to open water and then to forest.

Go late. The hour before sunset turns the whole river copper, and the hippos are at their most sociable.

Practical

  • Late afternoon, roughly 2 hours
  • Small boat, guided
  • Hippo, crocodile, kingfishers, fish eagles

Experiences are booked with the camp. Where they are configured in our reservation system you can add them while booking; otherwise tell us and we will arrange it. The park conservation fee applies to any activity inside the park and is paid at the gate.
